UGHELLI NORTH COUNCIL CHAIRMAN, OLOROGUN JARO EGBO HOLDS SECURITY MEETING WITH OTOVWODO MOTOR PARK, OTOVWODO RELEVANT STAKEHOLDERS AND SECURITY AGENCIES WITH THE AIMS OF RESTORING PEACE TO THE OTOVWODO MOTOR PARK..
.. Affirmed the decision taken by the State leadership of the NURTW and the state Government for a Seven-Man Caretaker Committee to run the affairs of the park pending the conclusion of investigations.
In a bid to restore peace and normalcy to the Otovwodo Motor Park in Ughelli North Local Government Area, the Executive Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Council, Olorogun (Barr) Jaro Movudu Egbo Ksc conveyed a powerful security meeting Comprising; the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Otovwodo Unit, Otovwodo Community Leadership, representative of the Ovie of Ughelli kingdom, President General of Ughelli Descendants Union (UDU), delegation of NURTW Delta State, Security Agencies ( Nigeria Police, Nigeria Army, DSS, SID, ) among others.
While giving his speech, the Council Chairman, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, stated that the purpose of the security meeting was to address some pressing security issues surrounding the Otovwodo motor park for the past weeks, which might degenerate into a crisis if not well handled.
"The reason why we called for this security meeting is that, there are some disturbances that has been going on for the past two weeks, in and around the motor park in Ughelli, Otovwodo park to be precise, under the 1999 constitution as amended, the control, ownership and maintenance of motor parks are vested on the Local Government Council, and by that section of the constitution, all motor parks are owned by the Local Government, therefore, the Otovwodo motor park is a property of the local government"
'The Government, through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the Delta state government in conjunction with the 25 LGAs areas, gave the NURTW the powers to control and run all the motor-parks in the state under the supervision of the councils and the state government. The Chairman added.
The Council Boss emphasized that the Community has no power to choose the leadership of the NURTW, but whatever decision is taken by the state body will be upheld by the Government both at the state and local government levels. He noted that the State government and the state leadership of the Union has officially written to the council on their stand on the subject matter, stressing that in their letter, the Comr Solomon Esharive led executive are to step aside for a seven man committee that will pilot the affairs of the park, pending when investigations and final decision is taken by the Union.
The Chairman who in his usual style of seeking public opinions on issues, gave room to all the leaders of the various groups present including the representative of the Palace, the Otovwodo community leaders, members of the NURTW, security agencies present to express their thoughts on the decision taken by the state leadership of the NURTW, and after several deliberations, all the parties AGREED to abide by the decision of the state leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers with the following resolutions reached.
1) That the security meeting recognizes that the Park is owned by the Ughelli North Local Government Council as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution, and is managed by the National Union of Road Transport workers (NURTW).
2) That the seven (7 ) man interim committee set up by the state leadership of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) headed by Olorogun Anthony Itobore should be allowed to run the affairs of the motor- park, pending when investigations are concluded on the former executive members and a decisions taken by the state government, state body of NURTW and the local Government Council.
3) That the Host community, Otovwodo, Ughelli, should be carried along by the interim Committee in the running of the affairs of the motor park while they are working, this is to ensure that peace and orderliness are maintained.
4) That the request made by the President General of Ughelli Descendants Union (UDU), Olorogun Samuel Akpemegi, to be allowed to explore settlement avenues between the contending parties and report back to the Council Chairman within the period of two weeks (14 days)
5) It was also noted that anyone or groups of persons who may want to contest the decisions taken today by all the relevant stakeholders are free to do so legally, without taking the law into their own hands.
6) Finally, anybody who goes against the peaceful resolutions reached in this meeting and goes back to cause problems in the park or in the community will be arrested by security operatives to face the law.
The Council Boss urged the state representative of the Union to do their investigation diligently without fear or favour, I'll will or affections and notify the council of their findings. He appeals to the members of the NURTW, Otovwodo motor park, to support and work closely with the interim Committee for them to succeed in their short stays.
